Review & Playlist: House of Sky and Breath by Sarah J Maas | @sjmaas @bloomsburybooks #crescentcity #hosab

Well friends, here we are! The time has finally come after a 2 year wait we finally have House of Sky and Breath by our High Lady herself, Sarah J Maas.

So without much further ado, let me bring you the blurb from Books 1&2!

House of Earth and Blood Blurb

Think Game of Thrones meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer with a drizzle of E.L. James – Telegraph

Perfect for fans of Jessica Jones and True Blood, this is a blockbuster modern fantasy set in a divided world where one woman must uncover the truth to seek her revenge.

Half-Fae, half-human Bryce Quinlan loves her life. Every night is a party and Bryce is going to savour all the pleasures Lunathion – also known as Crescent City – has to offer. But then a brutal murder shakes the very foundations of the city, and brings Bryce’s world crashing down.

Two years later, Bryce still haunts the city’s most notorious nightclubs – but seeking only oblivion now. Then the murderer attacks again. And when an infamous Fallen angel, Hunt Athalar, is assigned to watch her every footstep, Bryce knows she can’t forget any longer.

As Bryce and Hunt fight to unravel the mystery, and their own dark pasts, the threads they tug ripple through the underbelly of the city, across warring continents, and down to the deepest levels of Hel, where things that have been sleeping for millennia are beginning to stir …

With unforgettable characters and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom – and the power of love.

House of Sky and Breath Blurb

Sequel to the #1 New York Times bestseller. Sarah J. Maas’s sexy, groundbreaking CRESCENT CITY series continues with this second installment.

Bryce Quinlan and Hunt Athalar have made a pact. As they process the events of the Spring they will keep things … platonic … until the Solstice. But can they resist when the crackling tension between them is enough to set the whole of Crescent City aflame?

And they are not out of danger yet. Dragged into a rebel movement they want no part of, Bryce, Hunt and their friends find themselves pitted against the terrifying Asteri – whose notice they must avoid at all costs. But as they learn more about the rebel cause, they face a choice: stay silent while others are oppressed, or fight. And they’ve never been very good at staying silent.

In this sexy, action-packed sequel to the #1 bestseller House of Earth and Blood, Sarah J. Maas weaves a captivating story of a world about to explode – and the people who will do anything to save it.

Review

Well, well, well… Mrs Maas. You’ve done it again, haven’t you? Repaired the pieces of my shattered heart (the heart you shattered in book 1 and ACOTAR and ToG) only to break it again and again and again.

We pick up a few months down the line from where book 1 ended and honestly book 1 concluded pretty well so I had no idea what direction this book would go in but in true Sarah Janet Maas fashion, she threw curveball after curveball and knocked my socks off.

“We waste so much time. Maybe it’s our curse as immortals. To see time as a luxury, a never-ending ocean.” He loosed a long breath. “I wasted a lot of it.”

Sarah J Maas; House of Sky and Breath (ch 6)

I found that I wasn’t as connected with the characters during this one which was a hard adjustment after Maas built bonds beautifully in book 1 (HELLOO BRYCE AND LELE ANYONE?) So not having that connection impacted my reading experience to some extent. That is the only reason it wasn’t 5 stars for me because I craved the connections that we experienced in book one. I have never cried so much over fictional characters as I did in book one and I just didn’t get that same level of emotion in HOSAB.

That being said, I still really loved the book. We met new characters who brought an interesting dynamic to the story, new enemies and new perspectives. It saw estranged friends reunite and old friendships break down and with that cane new ships for me to sail away on.

If you’re looking for How Not to Be an Asshole, it’s shelved between Bye, Loser and Get the Fuck Out.

Sarah J Maas; House of Sky and Breath (Ch9)

We finally got steam and Hunt finally got rid of his blue balls🤣 readers everywhere let out a collective sigh of relief on his behalf! The sex scenes were interesting and well written as per SJM fashion.

If there’s one thing Maas does well it’s intricately weaving little tidbits into the story leaving her readers not knowing what will come next. She is literally the QUEEN of surprises. I mean that ending, THAT FUCKING ENDING. IT IS SO HARD NOT TO PUT A SPOILER BECAUSE THAT FUCKING ENDING HAS ME SHOOK. Can you believe we’ll likely have to wait another 2 years🙃🙃🙃🙃🙃

Overall for me, this was a 4.5⭐️ read for me. The plot was thrilling, the characters multi-dimensional and overall just typical of Sarah J Maas’ wonderful imagination. No one does fae quite like Queen Sarah.
